Marauders saw off London Falcons in a replay of the 2013 final
Mersey Marauders clinched their second Gay Football Supporters’ Network (GFSN) Cup at Sutton Coldfield’s Central Ground during the Bank Holiday weekend.
Marauders faced London Falcons in a replay of the 2013 final , a game Mersey won on penalties, and managed to once again pull off the upset against the GFSN Division 1 side.
A goal from Neftali Vellido was all that was needed to see off the Falcons in a tight affair on a sweltering afternoon on Saturday, May 28.
Paul Williams’ side had to soak up constant pressure during the early stages of the game, but it was they who nearly opened the scoring, only to a see a Joey Challoner shot blocked as it headed goalwards.
The London side almost opened the scoring midway through the first half when they rattled the crossbar, they would then force Mersey goalkeeper Michael Robinson into a smart save and hit the woodwork again late in the first half.
But on the stroke of half-time Mersey were ahead. Bernie Gibson was released by a hopeful long ball and was pulled back 35 yards from goal. John Appleton’s resulting free-kick could only be parried by the Falcons keeper and Vellido pounced to give Mersey the lead before the break.
Williams side came out with renewed belief after the interval, dominating possession to frustrate their opponents and see the game out.
Jubilant boss Williams told the ECHO: “We are delighted to have won the GFSN Cup for a second time. All the players worked extremely hard. The Falcons gave us a tough game as they always do, I would like to thank them for great game played in the right spirit and the organisers of the GFSN for putting on great event.”
